Warning sirens were turned on, urging residents to take shelter on high ground where floodwaters could not reach them.

Burgas police spokeswoman Ţvetelina Radneva said that the emergency number 112 received numerous calls from people in danger.

Several fire brigades were dispatched from Burgas and Primorsko to join the local fire services in fighting the floods.

In the popular camping site Arapiya, the water reached 2 meters. Several cars were washed away by rainwater and ended up in the sea.

The Veleka River flooded the road between Varvara and Sinemorets, blocking traffic. The National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology has issued a yellow code warning for strong winds and thunderstorms in 15 regions of Bulgaria and an orange code for strong storms in the Burgas region.
