- “This is an important public health issue,” said Elizabeth Bourne, adding that the Paris government is now drawing up plans for a national program to combat smoking, a scourge that causes an estimated 75,000 deaths in France each year.
The so-called “inhalation” devices give rise to certain habits in young people, which can then lead to nicotine addiction, said the French Prime Minister.
France’s goal is for all young people under the age of 20 to quit smoking by 2030
However, the Paris government has no intention of raising tobacco taxes in 2024 after raising them this year, Elisabeth Bourne said.
In 2021, French President Emmanuel Macron announced a series of ambitious goals to curb smoking and alcohol consumption, pledging to create more smoke-free places and wanting all young French people under the age of 20 to be smoke-free by 2030.
