An Ohio police department on Friday released body camera footage showing a police officer fatally shooting a pregnant black woman in a grocery store parking lot two weeks ago after she refused to get out of her car and was hit by a car, Reuters reported.

Video of the Aug. 24 incident in Blendon Township was released after the family of 21-year-old Ta’Kiah Young demanded that the officer who fired the fatal shot be held accountable.

“A female suspect of theft drove into one of my officers and the officer fired one shot through the windshield,” Blendon Police Chief John Belford said in a statement accompanying the release.

But Sean Walton, an attorney for Young’s family, said the young woman was a victim and the family wants the police officer prosecuted for killing her and her unborn child.

Young’s death is one of a long series of cases in which police officers have been accused of using excessive force, leading to the killing of black people and other minorities, prompting calls for reform of the US criminal justice system.

The incident happened in a grocery store parking lot in Blendon, 15 miles northeast of Columbus, the state capital.

Police officers confronted Young after an employee said she was among several people who stole liquor from the store.

A video released Friday shows a police officer standing outside Young’s car, repeatedly ordering him to get out. A second policeman stands in front of the car and points a gun at the windshield, asking him to get out.

Young can be seen driving his car toward the officer as he places his left hand on the hood and extends his right hand toward Young.

Young later died at a nearby hospital. Her unborn daughter did not survive.

Belford previously said on Facebook that police were called to the store to help a customer who was unable to get into his own car.

Both officers, who the department is not publicly naming, have been placed on administrative leave. The investigation is being conducted by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation.
