X, the social media company formerly known as Twitter, said on Tuesday it will now allow political advertising in the US by political candidates and parties and expand its security team ahead of the 2024 presidential election, Reuters reported.

Before billionaire Elon Musk bought the company in October, Twitter banned all political ads worldwide starting in 2019.

In January, Twitter lifted the ban and began allowing “interest-based advertising” in the US that raises awareness of issues such as voter registration, and said it plans to expand the types of political ads it will allow on the platform.

The move to allow political ads in the US could help X boost its revenue at a time when many advertisers have left the platform or cut spending on it, fearing appearing alongside objectionable content.

In a blog post on Tuesday, X said it would increase the number of its teams to combat content manipulation and “emerging threats.”

The company said it will create a global ad transparency center that will allow users to see what political ads are being advertised on X, and added that it will continue to ban political ads that spread false information or are intended to undermine public confidence in elections.

The platform, like other social media companies, has long been criticized by researchers and lawmakers for not doing enough to prevent misleading or fake content during major elections.

After Musk’s acquisition, Company X particularly faced questions in preparation for the US presidential election after it laid off thousands of employees, including those who worked on the trust and security team.
