Interior Minister Katalin Predoyu says the May 2 crash in the city that killed two young people after police let Vlad Paska go without a drug test, even though three types of drugs were found in his car, is a “major vulnerability systems,” and “the causes that lead to such tragedies can fall under the umbrella of a lack of professionalism.”
The Minister of Internal Affairs said that there is no final report on the May 2 event in which two young students died, but only the conclusions of partial inspections.
According to him, the police officers who stopped young Vlad Paska on the road had legal norms “that allowed them to conduct tests.”
May 2 tragedy, great vulnerability of the system
“They had rules that allowed them, if they noticed something wrong, to run tests. There is not only a law, but also a procedure for how such checks are carried out regarding the operation of a vehicle by a driver who may be under the influence of alcohol or other prohibited substances. These procedures allow the police officer to decide whether or not to administer the test, depending on what they find. So leave it to him, in the end it is the person who makes this decision, he is a professional,” the interior minister said Thursday evening on Digi 24, according to News.ro.
Predoyu said that the situation on May 2 is “a great vulnerability of the system.”
“I’m taking the system as it is, both in terms of equipment and in terms of training, and I’m trying to go further, and I’ve been trying since day one. What we have done since then and until today can be illustrated by concrete figures, in particular in terms of testing, control, traffic safety, as well as operational actions. That doesn’t mean that in certain situations like this, we don’t face serious vulnerabilities in the system, failures that have accumulated over time and that we have to address, and that’s what I’m going to do,” added Katelyn. Predoiu .
He noted that there are both objective and subjective reasons for such situations.
“In the most general terms, the reasons that lead to such tragedies can be brought under the category of unprofessionalism.” However, their correction, investigation of such situations, finding out the truth should be carried out professionally and procedurally and should not be limited only to the case itself, but lessons should also be learned from this,” Katelin Predoyu also confirmed.
What was Preda’s answer to the question of whether he regrets anything in the May 2 case
When asked if he regretted the accident on May 2, the minister replied: “Not directly, because I am not directly involved in the operation of conducting police events.” He added that while he holds the position of Minister of Internal Affairs, he is “pressured” by what happened.
“There is no doubt that on any given day in the position of minister you feel responsibility. So, no matter how you feel about such a tragedy, it is impossible not to put pressure on you, you cannot help but ask the question: if I had stayed in the office for another five minutes yesterday, perhaps I would have taken measures that contributed to the smooth operation of the institution, if we had another meeting…no way, especially in a ministry like this where things happen every day. (…) This is a message that presses, if you are a normal person, if you are sensitive, and the answer is yes, it presses on me,” said Minister Katalin Predoyu.
