Meta announced just days before a deadline set by the European Union that it would comply with the news feed that will be displayed to Facebook users, one of the biggest changes in the history of the social network, according to Forbes.
In particular, Meta has announced that it will comply with an order requiring it to comply with the provisions of the Digital Services Act (DSA) by August 25, which requires very large online platforms (VLOPs) to give their users the option to stop “tuning” their news feed and return to one that does not rely on special algorithms.
Earlier in August, TikTok took a similar step by removing personalized results from the “For Yu” feed and automatically stopping serving personalized ads based on past activity to users between the ages of 13 and 17.
The new rules introduced by Meta will also allow Instagram and Facebook users to see Stories and Reels only from the people and accounts they follow, in chronological order from the most recent post to the most recent, old post.
Users will also only be able to see search results based on the words they type, rather than those targeted specifically to them based on their past actions.
In addition to complying with European regulations, Meta will expand its advertising “library” to display and archive all advertising messages it shows to EU users, as well as the dates they were shown, the parameters used to select them – age, gender, location and cursing
Ads will be stored on servers for one year.
“This move brings a very different experience to users in the EU compared to users in other countries such as the United States and the United Kingdom,” Forbes noted.
