Novak Djokovic stunned the tennis world yet again with a spectacular comeback as the Serbian won the title in Cincinnati after a stunning final against Carlos Alcaraz. Former WTA No. 4 Johanna Konta spoke about the reasons why Nole is not as well-liked as Federer and Nadal, the Serb’s great rivals.
Johanna Konta says it’s fashionable to hate and no tennis fan can say exactly why they can’t stand Djokovic
In an interview with Tennis365.com, Johanna Konta touched on one of the hot topics in tennis at the moment.
Britannica, a former WTA No. 4, explained why Nole is hated by so many tennis fans.
To quote a saying so often used in Romanian politics, Djokovic is a victim of the “heavy legacy” that Federer and Nadal brought to tennis.
In particular, Nole arrived at the top of tennis when his great rivals had already been there for years, and Federer and Nadal had a significant fan base by the time the Serb became the ATP leader.
In addition, Konta says that it is fashionable to hate someone and that Nole has been thrust into the spotlight as a “negative hero” of the white sport.
The Brit talks about how no tennis fan can quite say why he hates Djokovic, even though it’s obviously been going on for years.
“I think out of all of them, Novak has suffered the most when it comes to personal image, for a couple of reasons.
He got there (not at the top of tennis) a bit later (not compared to his great rivals from Switzerland and Spain) and the Rafa and Roger fan base was already established.
In addition, Rafa and Roger can say that they changed the game, brought something new to tennis. Novak cannot say so. But that’s one of the reasons why tennis has progressed to where it is now.
I also find it crazy that Novak doesn’t have the same recognition from tennis fans as Nadal and Federer.
People don’t like Djokovic because he’s trendy, I also think it’s a trend to hate someone. I don’t think there is one person who can say why they don’t like Nole.
Nobody knows him, just like nobody really knows Roger or Rafa. If you stop any fan and ask them why they don’t like Djokovic, they won’t know for sure.
I really want him (not Nole) to reach 24 US Open Grand Slam titles. Djokovic has nothing to prove to anyone, he will only want to win for himself,” Johanna Konta told the quoted source.
With or without the support of some tennis fans, Novak Djokovic is taking solace in breaking records in the white sport.
Joker currently leads some of tennis’ most important hierarchies: most Grand Slam titles (23, compared to Nadal’s 22), most weeks at No. 1 in the world (389, compared to Federer’s 310), and most Masters titles (39, compared to Nadal’s 36 ).
The 2023 US Open (where Djokovic will be the second seed) will be held from August 28 to September 10, and highlights from the Flashing Meadows complex will be available daily on HotNews.ro.
