“For the second day in a row, firefighters, volunteers, the army, police and local authorities are fighting a major fire in Alexandroupolis,” said Civil Protection and Climate Crisis Minister Vassilis Kykilias.

“Fire danger forecasts declared a red alert on the island of Evia, Attica, Boeotia, Argolis and Corinth on Monday,” the minister warned. “Please be careful.”

In the last 24 hours, firefighters extinguished 53 fires.

According to the same sources, the most important of them is now advancing southeast from the village of Loutro to Monastiraki and Dorico.

Firefighters are trying to prevent the fire from reaching an animal rescue center near Dorico, said one of their spokesmen, Giannis Artopios.

Several villages were evacuated on Saturday.

In Greece, amid a heat wave, a fire that started on July 18 and was fueled by strong winds has devastated nearly 17,770 hectares in 10 days in the south of Rhodes, a tourist island in the Aegean Sea.

About 20,000 people, mostly tourists, had to be evacuated.
