The number of dead after fires in HawaiiThe death toll, already nearing 100, could rise significantly this week, the governor of the American archipelago, Josh Green, warned, saying rescue services expected to find 10 to 20 bodies a day, AFP reported.

“They’ll probably find 10 to 20 people a day until they’re done,” Green said in an interview that aired Monday on CBS.

According to him, the search will continue, “probably for another 10 days”, and the final estimate is currently “impossible to guess”.

A wildfire that nearly destroyed the town of Lahaina on Maui has killed 96 people, according to the latest preliminary report. This makes this fire the deadliest fire in the United States in a century.

The dogs are currently searching the rubble and ash for survivors, but they still have work to do.

The former capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii was almost destroyed by fire, and the damage is still immeasurable. The town of 12,000 people appears to have been bombed, and thousands of buildings have been reduced to piles of ash.

“To be honest, it’s nothing but utter desolation,” admitted Governor Greene, who visited the site last week.

As communications begin to be restored on the island, the number of people reported missing is dropping from 2,000 to 1,300, according to the governor.

“Our hearts will be broken beyond belief if this means there will be so many deaths,” he said.

The authorities are preparing “for many tragic stories”, although they do not think that the victims will be in the thousands.
