Algeria has banned the movie “Barbie”, which has been shown in some cinemas in the country for several weeks, an official source and local news site 24H Algeria said on Monday, according to Reuters.
An official source said the film “promotes homosexuality and other Western deviations” and that it “disrespects the religious and cultural beliefs of Algeria”.
Starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as Barbie and Ken, the comedy about a doll who decides to enter the real world has surpassed $1 billion in ticket sales worldwide since its July 21 debut.
Lebanon and Kuwait also banned the film on “public morality” grounds.
Algeria’s Ministry of Culture controls the content of films shown in cinemas and can stop showing them.
