Poles will vote to decide whether they agree with the privatization of state-owned companies, Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of the conservative Law and Justice (PiS) party, the most important party in Poland’s governing coalition, said on Friday, Reuters writes.

First, the Law and Justice party (PiS) announced the holding of a referendum on the EU migration agreement. Analysts believe PiS’s intention is to mobilize its core electorate ahead of parliamentary elections on October 15, which many consider the most important since the fall of communism in 1989.

“For us, the voice of ordinary Poles is always decisive. The voice of foreign politicians, including German politicians, is not important,” Yaroslav Kaczynski said in a video post on the X media platform.

The first question in the referendum will be: “Do you support the sale of state-owned companies?”.

The Law and Justice party (PiS) claims that the main opposition party Civic Platform (PO), led by former European Council President Donald Tusk, represents foreign interests, especially German interests. “The Germans want to bring Tusk to power in Poland in order to sell state property,” Kaczynski claims.

The Civic Platform rejected these criticisms and in turn accused the government of appointing people to well-paid positions in state-owned companies as a tool to reward their support. “If PiS wants to put issues related to state-owned companies to the referendum, then Kaczyński should ask the Poles if they support the nepotism, clientelism and theft that is happening now,” PO MP Marcin Kerwinski said.

According to the public radio station Polskie Radio 24, a total of four questions will be asked at the October referendum.

The lower house of the Polish Parliament will consider the legislative aspects of the organization of the referendum during the session, which will take place on August 16-17. (Source: Agerpres / Photo: Dreamstime.com)
