Special prosecutor Jack Smith proposed on Thursday that the trial of former US President Donald Trump for his alleged fraudulent attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election should take place from January 2024, AFP reports.

The presiding judge in federal court in Washington, D.C., Tanya Chutkan, scheduled a hearing for August 28 to determine a trial date. She gave the prosecution until August 10 and the defense until August 17 to formulate their proposals.

In his submissions to the judge on Thursday, the special counsel proposed a trial date of January 2, 2024, arguing that the trial “should not last more than four to six weeks.”

According to Jack Smith, the date “represents an appropriate balance between the right of the accused to prepare his defense and the strong public interest in a speedy trial” in such a landmark case in which the former president is accused of undermining federal institutions.

In another case in federal court in Florida (southeast), Donald Trump’s personal assistant, Walt Nauta, pleaded not guilty on Thursday to additional charges brought against him in late July in the case of careless handling of the alleged former president’s confidential documents.
