With the score 6-4 and 2-1 in favor of Collins, Maria hit the ball into the stands. That was the spark that ignited a contentious debate between the two players.

Collins asked the chief justice if she saw what happened. The American hoped that her opponent would receive a warning.

“I didn’t even hit anybody, it was on the field,” Sakkari replied. After hearing the words of the athlete from Greece, Collins told Maria: “Shut up, shut up!”

The conflict continued, and Sakkari replied to her opponent: “What is your problem?”

“You hit the ball into the stands, Maria. It was to hit someone,” the American woman added, and the Greek woman’s answer did not take long: “I didn’t hit anyone, what’s the problem?”

Collins, who is ranked 48th in the world, won 6-4, 6-2 at the end of the match, which lasted an hour and 27 minutes.

Danielle Collins reached the 1/8 finals of the WTA 1000 tournament, where she will meet Leila Fernandez.
