The mayor of the city of Tampa in the American state of Florida, Jane Castor, who was fishing with her family in the Florida Keys, chose an unexpected “catch”: a package with almost 32 kilograms of cocaine worth 1.1 million dollars, reports DPA/TCA.
Mayor Jane Castor told Tampa television station WFLA-TV that she was on a boat with her family and heading toward the harbor when her brother spotted the wreckage. They came closer because, according to the mayor, smaller fish tend to gather under rubble, looking for shade.
“As we got closer, I realized it was a package of cocaine,” said Castor, who spent eight years as a narcotics officer with the Tampa Police Department and six years as the agency’s chief.
More than 20 smaller packages decorated with blue and purple butterflies were found inside the plastic wrap.
After Castor pulled the package into the boat, he notified the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. US Border Patrol agents later confirmed the package’s contents and value.
“Last weekend, Border Patrol agents from Miami County seized 70 pounds (almost 32 kilograms) of cocaine found by a person on a pleasure boat in the Florida Keys. The estimated street value of these drugs is approximately $1.1 million,” Senior Patrol Agent Walter N. Slosar wrote on social media.
As she told the Tampa Bay Times, Jane Castor has been going on this summer fishing trip for almost a decade. This year her brother, son and his girlfriend made up her company. His usual catch consists of mahi mahi (dolphin fish) and lobster. (Source: Agerpres / Photo: Dreamstime.com)
