Dozens of used tanks that belonged to Belgium will be sent to Ukraine following a deal between an arms dealer and an unnamed European country, Sky News reports.
Belgium sold the German-made tanks to the defense company OIP Land Systems more than five years ago.
OIP has now agreed to sell 50 tanks to another government, which cannot be named because of confidentiality clauses in the contract. In turn, the anonymous government will hand over armored fighting vehicles to Ukraine.
The total value of the deal was not disclosed, but earlier this year Belgian Defense Minister Ludivine Dedonder criticized private military contractors for asking him for high prices when asked if Belgium could buy back the old military equipment it had sold.
The tanks are old – the Leopard 1 was first produced in the 1960s, but some tanks will be used for spare parts and others will be refurbished and put into service.
A representative of the Belgian Ministry of Defense declined to comment on the sale of the tanks.
