The Union of French Professional Footballers (UNFP) has warned PSG about the situation with star Kylian Mbappe, who was left out of the squad for the trip to Japan due to his refusal to renew his contract with the reigning French champions.

The striker announced this month that he wants to terminate his contract with PSG, which expires in June 2024, but is refusing to activate an option in his contract that allows him to extend the deal by one year, angering the Paris club’s leader Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

The official warned Mbappe that PSG “cannot afford to lose the best player in the world for free” and offered him two options: extend his contract until 2025 or move to another club this summer for a (significant) sum of money.

UNFP president Philip Pia warned that his union “will be forced to demand compliance with the texts” if a solution to the conflict is not found by the end of the handover period. Specifically, that means “allowing Mbappe to train normally, probably forcing the club to play him, because otherwise it would be harassment. It would become illegal in terms of labor law,” Piatt said.

“When it comes to a not-so-famous player, you can be led to believe that he is not in good shape. But as far as the best football player in the world is concerned, it cannot be allowed to assume that the reason is not the sanction. The text I have in mind provides for sanctions if a player is left on the sidelines for unsportsmanlike reasons. The procedures will be open,” UNFP president emphasized.
