“Tunisia has the necessary natural resources of wind and sun in abundance,” said von der Leyen before the participants of the migration conference organized on Sunday in Rome.

“The production of clean energy in the European Union costs 10 cents per kilowatt at best. In Tunisia, it can cost less than 2 cents,” and that is why this country has a huge competitive advantage, emphasized the president of the European Commission.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni hosted Mediterranean leaders in Rome on Sunday for an “international conference” aimed at expanding the model agreement signed by the European Union with Tunisia to stem the flow of migrants to Europe. Cooperation between the Mediterranean and Africa is also discussed in the context of migration.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Maloney said Italy and Europe need immigration but should not send a signal that they will reward illegal immigration. Countering immigrant trafficking requires joint efforts and close cooperation, Maloney stressed.

The EU recently concluded a 900 million euro deal with Tunisia aimed at combating illegal migration and a package of measures for the North African country.

“We want our agreement with Tunisia to be a model, a project for the future for partnership with other countries in the region,” von der Leyen said.
