Streaming platform Netflix launched its first African animated series on Thursday, with Zambian writer Malenga Mulendema hoping for more original films from the continent, AFP reported.

Supa Team 4 is set in a futuristic version of Zambia’s capital, Lusaka, and tells the story of four teenage girls who are recruited by a former secret agent to save the world.

“I am delighted that the world will finally see a fantastic series created by a very talented team from Africa and beyond,” Malenga Mulendema told AFP. “We hope that Supa Team 4 will lead to new investments and collaborations so that we can continue to grow the industry,” she added.

Malenga Mulendema created the series after becoming one of the eight winners of the 2015 Triggerfish Story Lab initiative, a pan-African talent competition.

When the series was announced for 2019, the writer said he wanted to set the story in his home country of Zambia to “show that anyone, anywhere can be a superhero.”

“The (cartoon) series shaped our childhoods and knowing that young Zambians will be able to see something they’ve never seen before on TV is fantastic!” – recently wrote on Instagram the Zambian rapper Sampa Velikiy, who worked on the main musical theme.

In recent years, the streaming platform has focused on diversifying its output outside the US, producing hit series such as Spain’s La Casa de Papel and South Korean dystopian drama The Squid Game.

In April, Netflix said it plans to expand its presence in Africa and give “more African storytellers a greater voice on the world stage.”
