Dutch politician Frans Timmermans will leave the European Commission to run for the joint leadership of the Labor Party and the left-wing Green Party in the Netherlands’ national elections in November, the De Volkskrant newspaper reported on Thursday, reported by Reuters and Agerpres.
The newspaper writes that Timmermans, a member of the Dutch Labor Party, informed the European Commission about his decision. The Labor Party and the left-wing Green Party have decided to join forces for the November 22 vote in an attempt to limit the decline of the left-wing parties.
The European Commission did not comment on an article in the Dutch press, which also said the Dutch politician would announce his candidacy in Maastricht later on Thursday.
European climate commissioner Frans Timmermans, 62, the European Commission’s executive vice-president for the Green Deal, was also asked this month about a possible return to politics in his country and did not rule it out.
He is a prominent political figure in the Netherlands, where he was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2012 to 2014 in the previous cabinet of Prime Minister Mark Rutte.
The current Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, resigned last Friday from his right-wing government and said that he will not run for a new mandate, but will resign after the formation of a new cabinet as a result of the elections.
Mark Rutte is the longest-serving Prime Minister of the Netherlands. He assumed the post of Prime Minister in October 2010.
