American carmaker Tesla announced on Saturday that the first copy of its Cybertruck electric pickup rolled off the production line at its mega-plant in Texas, in the southern United States, AFP reports.

“The first Cybertruck built in Giga Texas,” the company tweeted, posting a photo showing the vehicle surrounded by dozens of people wearing yellow safety vests and hard hats in what looks like a hangar.

Elon Musk, head of Tesla and Twitter, retweeted the message with the comment: “Congratulations to the Tesla team.”

The automaker said in April that production of the pickup would begin “on schedule” as planned later this year at a new plant in Texas.

The futuristic-looking car, a kind of metal body with rather unusual angular lines, was presented in November 2019.

His presentation caused a stir when an employee, trying to demonstrate the strength of the car, broke an armored window with a steel sledgehammer, which made Elon Musk curse. The second attempt damaged another window.

Two days after the car’s high-profile unveiling, Tesla said it had received nearly 150,000 pre-orders that required — and still require — a refundable down payment of just $100.

In May, Elon Musk indicated that the goal is to produce 250,000 units per year, noting that this figure could double as its price makes it affordable.

At launch, the Cybertruck, which according to Tesla’s website can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in less than three seconds, was to be available in three models starting at $39,900 and with a range of 400 km. base model, $69,900 and a range of 800 km for the top model.
