Two doctors who run a private ophthalmology clinic in Bucharest have been sent to court by the prosecutor’s office, which accuses them of importing human tissue from Italy, i.e. more than 300 corneas, into the country without permission between 2019 and 2022. special ones issued by the National Agency for Transplantation.
The two doctors were sent to trial by the Prosecutor’s Office of the 1st District Court of Bucharest for the crimes of importing or removing from the country organs, tissues or cells of human origin without a special permit issued by the National Agency for Transplantation and forging documents. under personal signature.
According to the cited source, in the period from 2019 to 2023, the ophthalmology clinic in Bucharest, which was the object of the investigation, circumvented the law on obtaining the necessary permits and accreditation.
Investigators say that between 2019 and 2022, two doctors running the clinic imported human tissue, namely 303 corneas, into Romania without a special permit issued by the National Transplantation Agency.
At the same time, it was also established that 303 corneal transplant operations have been performed so far from the one received from the tissue bank abroad.
In addition, in 293 documents for the import of cornea, one of the related doctors could mention that he has a special permit for the import of tissue of human origin – cornea, which was not true.
Thus, several documents were discovered and seized during the searches, as well as 283 corneal transplant files with all related documentation. All these falsified documents were used in commercial relations with Banca Fondazione Degli Occhi Del Veneto – Onlus in Italy.
Simone Angel, a spokeswoman for the 1st District Court’s attorney’s office, said there were no reported complaints from patients who benefited from the cornea transplants, so prosecutors could not investigate whether there was any negligence in the case. (Photo: Dreamstime.com)
