US President Joe Biden arrived in Finland on Wednesday evening for a 24-hour visit to the country, which neighbors Russia and marked a historic moment by joining NATO in April, AFP reports.
The presidential plane Air Force One, which had arrived from Vilnius, where the annual summit of the Atlantic alliance was held, landed around 22:00 local time (19:00 GMT) at Helsinki International Airport.
On Thursday, Joe Biden is scheduled to meet with Finnish President Sauli Niiniste, the main architect of Finland’s accession to NATO, as well as with the leaders of other Scandinavian countries.
Turning the page on decades of neutrality imposed by Moscow after World War II and then military nonalignment after the end of the Cold War, Finland became the 31st member of the Atlantic alliance on April 4, a setback for Moscow.
This country, which shares a more than 1,300-kilometer border with Russia, was a supporter of dialogue between the West and Russia until the invasion of Ukraine.
A position that materialized in 2018 through a summit on its territory that brought together then-US President Donald Trump and his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin.
According to the Finnish president, Thursday’s talks will focus on “cooperation between the Nordic countries and the United States in matters of security, the environment and technology.”
This visit is the last leg of President Biden’s European tour after London and the NATO summit in Vilnius, which was mainly devoted to the war in Ukraine.
