Ukraine can receive long-range ATACM missiles from the United States, said an American general quoted by Sky News.

Kyiv has long sought tactical missile systems from the US military, arguing that they would help them strike Russian forces far behind the front lines.

“This missile is a great system, it adds range. Essentially, it will provide the ability to attack deeper targets,” said Gen. Randy George, Joe Biden’s nominee for top Army general.

When asked if it would help Ukraine, he answered: “Yes.”

ATACMs are surface-to-surface ballistic missiles weighing up to 1,673 kg.

They have a range of about 298 km and are generally mobile and vehicle-based.

They were first used during the Persian Gulf War in 1991.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been asking for them since the first days of the war, but the Biden administration is still unwilling to send them.

Britain has already sent long-range Storm Shadow cruise missiles to Ukraine with a range similar to ATACMS, which are said to be successfully hitting Russian targets.

France has already started delivering a significant number of SCALP missiles to Ukraine, which will be integrated into non-Western military aircraft, a French military source told Reuters on Tuesday, adding that the missiles, which have a range of 250 km, will only be used within Ukraine’s internationally recognized borders. Paris does not see this as an escalation, given that Russia has launched missiles with a much longer range, the source added.

“I have decided to increase arms and equipment supplies to allow the Ukrainians to be able to deliver deep strikes, while maintaining our doctrine of allowing Ukraine to defend its territory,” Macron said after arriving at a NATO summit in Lithuania.
