Rescuers from Hunedoara and Gorz were on high alert on Tuesday evening after a bright light with flames and noise was seen in the sky passing over the ridge of the Valkan massif, News.ro reported. At first it was assumed that it was a plane with problems, but later mountain rescuers realized that it was a meteorite.
- “The meteorite alerted the mountain rescuers in Hunedoar and Gorja. After a bright light was observed in the sky in the Lupeni-Urikani area with flames and noise moving at high speed to the south, near the crest of the Valkan massif, mountain rescuers on duty at Salvamont Base Hunedoara and Salvamont Gorge raised the alarm, the first assumption was problems with the plane.”
- “The situation was declared as very uncertain, as there were no calls in the 112 system regarding this event, and there was no activation of the aircraft with problems or an accident warning,” Salvamont Romania representatives said on Facebook.
Later, based on information and images, mountain rescuers realized that it was a meteorite that was moving south-south, on the line Stăneşti-Târgu Jiu-Târgu Cărbuneşti.
“Information that will emerge in the next few hours will confirm whether it crashed in Romania or whether it even had sufficient height and speed to reach Bulgaria or Serbia,” mountain rescuers said.
