The attack was repulsed by the 110th Mechanized Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, whose fighters hit Russian armored vehicles with guided fire from drones after the Russian army again tried to advance in open space.

The footage was shot on the northern flank of the front in the area of Avdiyivka, a city in the Donetsk region, around which fierce fighting has been going on since March.

The footage shows that during the counterattack attempt, the Russians lost at least 6 BMP-1 tanks, an MT-LB tank and a T-72B tank.

“Given the fact that probably at least 10-12 BMPs participated in the assault, this means 60-70% losses,” the administrators of the OSINTTechnical page note.

The context in which this Russian attack took place remains unclear, as their offensive appears to have entered a period of relative lull following the capture of Bakhmut in late May and the start of the Ukrainian offensive last month.

It may have been launched to ease Ukrainian pressure on other areas of the front here, as the Ukrainian army appears to be trying to encircle Russian forces in Bakhmut, although the main line of attack is to the south in Zaporizhia Oblast.

The head of Wagner’s mercenaries, Yevgeny Prigozhin, charged in early June that some of the Russian regular troops stationed north of Bakhmut fled in the face of Ukrainian attacks, but it is currently unclear at what stage Kyiv’s offensive is at.
