At just 16 years old, Mirra Andreeva defeated Anastasia Potapova and reached the 1/8 finals of Wimbledon. At the press conference, the athlete from Russia talked about her tennis idol and explained that outside the court she behaves like an ordinary teenager.
Mirra Andreeva: “I am different off the field. I do what girls my age do”
Andreeva was very confident in her match against Potapova and showed extraordinary maturity for her age. After the match, Mirra said that Rafael Nadal is her role model.
“Rafa really impressed me. He recovered from the injury and went on to win the Australian Open and Roland Garros. In my mind, I sometimes try to copy him.
After I lost my match to Coco Gauff (at Roland Garros), I took a few days to reflect and have a deep conversation with myself.
How should I approach the sport, what decisions should I make on the field, trying to improve my tactical intelligence. I have changed a lot, I want to show my emotions less and stay focused.
I think I’m just a normal teenager, a normal girl. I think I do everything girls my age do… I have to go to school. I have no choice. I have to suffer for two more years…
On the court, I try to think only about tennis, about the game, about the next point. But outside the field I am different” – Mirra Andreeva.
Andreyeva dodged questions about the support she received from Russia and talked about how she was helped by her family and locals in her hometown of Krasnoyarsk, who wrote about her success on social media.
