In Paris, residents and tourists will again be able to swim in the Seine from 2025, for the first time in more than 100 years, the mayor of the city, Anne Hidalgo, announced on Sunday, reports dpa.
She mentioned three places that will be open to visitors, an aquatic center that is already partially in use, and two more swimming centers near the Eiffel Tower.
Swimming areas will be demarcated by lighthouses and accessible via a jetty. Changing rooms and showers will be installed, the city hall informed.
Bathing in the Seine is an old desire of Parisians. In 1900, when the Olympic Games were first held in Paris, swimming competitions were organized in the Seine.
Swimming in the river was officially banned in 1923 due to the poor water quality in the city, but was still practiced until the early 1960s.
Now the project has received a boost thanks to the 2024 Olympic Games, which will be held in Paris. Some swimming competitions will be held in the Seine
