Member of the European Parliament Corina Kretsu, a former European Commissioner, believes that the facts that happened in those terrible shelters could not have happened without political “support”, “perhaps cross-party”. At the same time, she emphasized that she is friends with the mayor of Voluntari, Florentin Pandele, and the minister of the family, Gabriela Firea, but “you can’t even say that you don’t know anything.”

“As the Prime Minister said, it’s not about two or three people who agreed to live off some bitter old men, but about the whole system, and this whole system, in my opinion, because we live in Romania and somehow it already entered into collective consciousness that some officials cannot do such things without being somehow politically covered, and here I believe that it is necessary to bring the matter to an end. (…) All this, somehow, happened in front of people who maybe could have changed something, and I wonder how these people can sleep peacefully,” said Korina Kretsu on Sunday at Prima, according to News.ro.

The MEP believes that it is “quite hard to believe” that local decision-makers were unaware of the situation. She is convinced that what happened will become a topic that will also be reported by the foreign press, and the Romanian state will be monitored for the measures it takes.

“It is shocking what is happening, and I think that regardless of the political color that has been achieved, or both political colors, because at the end of the day PSD and PNL lead all the districts in Romania, regardless of the political colors, if we ended up with that killed our old people in cold blood, nothing happened, I believe that trust in institutions and politicians will decrease sharply, because this is a case that cannot but shake every soul,” added Korina Kretsu.

In this context, she admitted that she knows “cases of people who are afraid to speak in Romania”, referring to the fact that “everyone knows that nothing happens there without the knowledge of Mr Pandele”.

“It was… also with Gabi Firea, we were friends, I was also a journalist, but you can’t even say that you don’t know anything. Especially since you are in office, that is, you have to take it upon yourself. There is no need to think, if it suits us politically, if it does not suit us politically, we use another measure. To clarify if he had any role. We’ll see what the courts say, I can’t change the courts, but I still think these things couldn’t have been done without protection, I think maybe bipartisanship. We dont know. Here, for some reason, it really seems to me that all weapons are placed on Gabi Firea,” the MEP also stated.

She believes that everything that happened “is a clear proof of the lack of humanity, beyond legal issues.”
