Journalist Luis Martín Sánchez Iniguez, a correspondent for La Jornada newspaper in the state of Nayarit (northwestern Mexico), was found dead on Saturday after being reported missing, the newspaper he worked for said, AFP and Agerpres reported.

“The body found in the small town of Huachines (…), in the municipality of Tepic, has been identified as that of Luis Martín Sánchez Iníguez, 59, a correspondent for the newspaper La Jornada,” the newspaper reported on its page. website.

The body was found Saturday morning in a rural area near Tepic, the capital of Nayarit state. It appears that he was wrapped in plastic bags and had a message on his chest, probably from the criminals, local media reported.

According to sources cited by El Pais, the message was caught with a knife stuck in the journalist’s chest. The Spanish newspaper notes that this method is typical of organized criminal groups.

Citing information from local authorities, the publication said that the journalist’s wife told the prosecutor’s office that she did not know where the journalist was on Wednesday night, when she was in another city to visit her parents.

Luis Martin Sanchez Iniguez was at home Wednesday night talking to his wife on the phone.

According to the newspaper, she said she found at home the clothes her husband was wearing the last day he saw him and all his personal belongings in his wallet, except for a La Jornada correspondent card.

The family also reported that “a computer, mobile phone, hard drive and sandals are missing,” the newspaper added.

This is the third La Jornada correspondent killed in recent years, following the murders of journalists Miroslava Bric in Chihuahua in March 2017 (north) and Javier Valdes in Sinaloa (northwest) in May of the same year. He was an AFP employee.

According to RSF, Mexico is considered one of the most dangerous countries in the world for journalism.

According to the organization, more than 150 journalists have been killed in this country since 2000.

Since the beginning of the year, four journalists have been killed in Mexico, the latest victim being Luis Martín Sánchez Iniguez.
