There is a serious shortage of engineers in Hungary, specialists are migrating to Romania, and the country has turned into an assembly shop, said the president of the Association of Engineers “Together for the Future” in an interview with the Hungarian portal Napi.hu, quoted by Nepszava and Rador. .

László Abraham noted that the number of students studying engineering courses should be doubled, because if there are not enough engineers in Hungary, “we will remain just an assembly plant.”

Even if education were to be put in order overnight today, it would take another 8-10 years for more engineers to graduate from higher education and enter the domestic labor market, Laszlo Abraham believes.

According to the expert, in this sense, Finland is a very good example, where educational institutions are very well equipped and where great emphasis is placed on teaching real subjects. On the other hand, Hungary is going in the wrong direction, falling into the trap of middle-developed countries.

Regarding the mushrooming of battery factories, he said that a major problem is that Hungarian companies are looking for skilled workers, while all the knowledge in the automotive industry comes from development offices.

That is why, according to László Abraham, the reform should start from the foundation – from the early education of the child – and the rank of the engineering profession should be restored. For example, EJMSZ launched a series of programs this year in which engineering work is presented to preschoolers in the form of a game to spark interest in the subject.

László Abraham noted that due to the decline in the birth rate, there will be fewer and fewer young engineers. Another issue raised by the expert is that for some reason women are generally reluctant to choose the engineering profession, even though they are at least as skilled, persistent and precise as men.

He especially noted the shortage of teachers: there are not enough teachers of mathematics, physics and science, which leads to a decrease in the interest of students in the subjects themselves.

For this reason, EJMSZ has launched several projects in the field of creativity, experiential education in physics, mathematics and chemistry for schools, which reward best practices and support teachers who make young people interested in real subjects.

According to the expert, engineering education at universities is also not appropriate, since dual education led to the collection of only the best students of the corresponding academic year – approximately 5 percent – and the rest did not get into multinational companies.

And although engineering salaries in Hungary are among the top 10 salaries based on a comparison between professions, the salaries are still not enough: not only in Western Europe can you earn 3-5 times more than in Hungary, but nowadays even a Romanian engineer brings home more than Hungarian engineer.

This led to the fact that if earlier engineers came from Romania to work in Hungary, today the trend has changed, says Abraham. quoted by Nepszava.
