The first break in play came on Wednesday when Begu (the 29th seed) was leading 6-2, 2-4 through darkness.

Marino (83 WTA) won Thursday’s return match 6-3 and led with a break in the decider (2-1), but Iryna came back to win the next five games (6-2).

The match was interrupted again with a score of 4-2 in favor of the Romanian in the third set, a person in the stands needed medical help.

• By advancing to the second round, Iryna secured a prize of £85,000 and 70 points in the world ranking.

• Begu will face Anna Blinkova (40 WTA) in the next round, after the Russian outlasted Belgium’s Yanina Wickmayer (112 WTA), 6-2, 4-6, 6-3.
