Cocaine found at the White House has sparked political controversy as an executive branch spokesman insists the drugs were found in an area frequented by foreign visitors while the president and his family were away, AFP reported.
Earlier, the Secret Service, which is responsible for the security of high-ranking officials of the US government, confirmed after analysis that the white powder found on Sunday in the famous west wing of the building turned out to be cocaine.
Initially, the substance was considered potentially dangerous, prompting a brief evacuation. Suspicious powders that regularly arrive in the mail at official US buildings are being treated as potential chemical or bacteriological attacks.
Anthony Guglielmi, a spokesman for the Secret Service, said Wednesday that the investigation is “ongoing.”
The discovery of cocaine in the White House caused speculation in the American press about its culprits. Several right-wing figures immediately pointed the finger at the president’s son, Hunter Biden, for his history of addiction.
Donald Trump accused Joe and Hunter Biden of a message filled with insults.
“Does anyone really believe that the COCAINE found in the West Wing of the White House, very close to the Oval Office, was intended for consumption by anyone other than Hunter and Joe Biden?” the former Republican president said on his Truth social network.
Republican Sen. Tom Cotton on Wednesday asked the Secret Service to release the exact location where the cocaine was found.
“The American people deserve to know whether illegal drugs have been found in an area where classified information is shared,” he wrote in a letter to the director of the Secret Service.
