Spain, Portugal, Ukraine and Morocco – a joint bid for the 2030 World Cup
After four South American countries (Argentina, Uruguay, Chile and Peru) decided to apply for the joint organization of the 2030 World Cup, another quartet announced a joint candidacy: Spain, Portugal, Ukraine and Morocco, writes News.ro.
Initially, there were two candidates – Spain and Portugal, to which Ukraine joined in October 2022.
After the Ukrainian federation was caught in a corruption scandal, the Iberian countries were tempted to abandon their Eastern European partner, bringing in Morocco, which in April 2023 officially announced that it would become a partner of Spain and Portugal in the organization of the FIFA World Cup from 2030.
Finally, candidacies were announced for all four countries, clarifying that Ukraine will be able to organize the World Cup only if the country ceases to be in a state of war.
This will be the first tournament to be held in countries on two different continents.
The 2030 World Cup will be the second after the 2026 World Cup hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, which will feature 48 nations.
The applications of Spain, Portugal, Ukraine and Morocco aim to emphasize environmental friendliness.
In addition to the two general candidacies – South American and European-African, Saudi Arabia also claims to host the 2030 World Cup.
FIFA should appoint the host countries of the 2030 World Cup in September 2024.
