The Ministry of Education, which a day ago mistakenly published the hierarchy of student admissions to higher education institutions and later removed it from the website, issued an explanation on Wednesday, saying that “the integrity of the database was not compromised and that the situation was caused by an error in the algorithm of applying the order decisive criteria” of students.

Admission to secondary school – how candidates are ranked

The Ministry of Education clarifies that according to the high school admissions calendar, after displaying the final results of the national assessment, the county/municipality hierarchy for high school admission is displayed.

Candidates are ranked in descending order of the average entrance score (equal to the average score obtained during the national assessment) and, in the case of the same average indicators, with the application of the following determining criteria, respectively:

  • the score obtained in the Romanian language and literature test, as part of the national assessment
  • the grade received at the final exam in mathematics, at the final exam
  • the score obtained from the mother tongue and literature test, if applicable
  • secondary graduation of V – VIII classes.

“An error in the tie-break ordering algorithm”

On Tuesday, the Ministry of Education incorrectly published the hierarchy of admission of students to secondary school, setting as the criterion of distinction the average score in grades V-VIII, and not grades in the Romanian language and mathematics, writes Edupedu.ro. It has since been removed from the site.

In a message from the Ministry of Education, sent on Wednesday, it is stated that “inconsistencies were found in the computer application with regard to the order of application of the decisive criteria established by the Methodology of organization and conduct of admission to high school”, so it asked representatives of the IT service provider to cancel the hierarchy to check the correctness of the application decisive criteria, accordingly correcting errors and, subsequently, an updated publication.

  • “We clarify that the integrity of the database was not violated and that the situation was caused by an error in the algorithm for applying the order of tie-breaks. We also note that the current situation does not affect the process of compiling options and the computerized distribution of candidates within the framework of admission to higher education. At the same time, we would like to clarify that according to the provisions of the high school admission calendar for the 2023-2024 academic year, the announcement of the hierarchy at the county/municipality level of Bucharest is scheduled for July 5.
  • We understand the importance of this moment for everyone involved, graduates and their parents. We assure you that we are taking measures to ensure that all processes aimed at the educational system go smoothly, and if errors occur, they are corrected in a timely manner so that there are no consequences,” the Ministry of Education said. .
