The Permanent Electoral Authority (AEP) has decided to suspend subsidy payments to the People’s Movement Party, founded by Traian Basescu, following a dispute over the leadership of the formation between former president Cristian Diaconescu and the new leadership elected in September 2022. congress and represented by Eugene Tomak, AEP chairman Tony Greble told News.ro. We will remind, Eugene Tomak was elected president of the PMP at the congress, which was opposed by the former president of the party, Christian Diaconescu, who challenged this decision in court.
- “There is a misunderstanding in the PMP regarding the legitimate leadership of the party. There are two people who consider themselves presidents.
- As for official documents, a certain person is registered in the Register of Political Parties as a party representative, and after holding an extraordinary congress, another person is considered to have the right to represent the party.
- We are obliged to pay this subsidy to the party, the PMP, and the party should be represented by the person who leads the party,” the AEP president explained the decision to stop paying the subsidy to the People’s Movement Party.
- Since there is this dispute and it is in court, we considered the possibility of informing them by announcing to both of them that we are suspending the payment of the subsidy until this dispute is resolved amicably or in court,” he told News.ro president. AEP, Tony Greble.
He said the PMP would pay the withheld amounts when the dispute at the top of the party was resolved in court.
MEP Eugen Tomak was elected PMP president at the party’s convention in February 2022. However, Christian Diaconescu challenged the organization of this congress in court, claiming that it does not comply with the organization’s charter.
Cristian Diaconescu led the PMP until February 19, 2022, when he was removed by congress. Subsequently, he was expelled from the PMP by the formation’s new leadership.
