Director of Don Myang International Airport, Karanth Thanakulierapat, said the incident happened in the southern corridor of the passenger terminal for domestic flights.

At a press conference on Thursday, Karanth said the woman, who was traveling to the southern city of Nakhon Si Thammarat, suffered a “serious accident” after her left leg caught the end of a conveyor belt. Doctors quickly intervened and the woman was taken to the nearest hospital. Due to the seriousness of the injuries, the woman’s leg was amputated and she was transferred to Bumrungrad International Hospital, one of the best medical units in the country, the director added.

Authorities have not released the woman’s name, but her son Krit Kitthirattana posted a statement on Facebook calling the accident “heartbreaking.” He said his mother has undergone surgery, but she still faces the risk of potential complications and that doctors are watching closely for any signs of infection.

“My mother continued to show that she was strong with her facial expressions and voice. But deep down we know her heart is broken because she suddenly lost her leg,” he wrote.

He added that the family asked to remove the accident from the CCTV cameras.

Karanth, the airport’s director, said the state-owned Airports Of Thailand (AOT), which manages airports across the country, would cover all medical expenses and provide compensation.

He added that all taxiways at the airport were closed while the cause of the incident was investigated and engineers carried out a safety check.

“The causes of the incident are still being established to establish the facts. We may need to set up a commission of inquiry with the participation of outsiders to achieve impartiality and transparency,” he said.

However, the director expressed his appreciation for the airport’s maintenance and regular inspections and said the runway has been in operation for 39 years.

One of Bangkok’s two international airports, Don Myang, is located in the northern part of the capital. It used to be the city’s main airport until the new, larger Suvarnabhumi Airport opened in 2006.
