
National Geographic magazine, known for its nature, history and science articles as well as photography, will lay off all of its paid editors in the US. Disney Group, which owns the magazine, says it will continue to be published in English with the same frequency. There will be more cuts for the famous yellow rectangle.
The future looks bleak for the print magazine. The Washington Post wrote that in order to cut costs, National Geographic magazine will no longer be sold on newsstands in the United States from 2024.
This wave of layoffs is the fourth since 2015, with the latest occurring nine months ago. In this latest series, 19 hired editors are leaving.
An English magazine will appear later. Instead of paid editors, freelancers will write, and the final texts will be corrected and “edited” by editors.
We will remind that at the beginning of 2022, the magazine stopped being published in Romania after 20 years of publication.
Chris Albert, a spokesman for National Geographic, tells the Washington Post that the announced cuts will NOT affect the magazine’s monthly publication frequency. “We’ll be able to tell different stories and meet our audience where they are on multiple platforms,” says Albert.
The magazine has been published in English since 1888, and reached its peak in the 1980s, when it had nearly 13 million subscribers in the United States and several million more in the rest of the world. With 1.8 million subscribers in the U.S. at the end of 2022, the magazine was one of the most widely read in the world, with few magazines remaining “in print”.
