
President Klaus Iohannis will participate on Tuesday in The Hague, Kingdom of the Netherlands, in a small meeting dedicated to the preparation of the NATO Summit in Vilnius, the Presidential Administration announced on Monday.
The head of state is participating in the meeting at the invitation of the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, together with the presidents of Lithuania and Poland, the prime ministers of Albania, Belgium and Norway, and the Secretary General of NATO.
The President’s Administration notes that the purpose of the meeting is to coordinate the member states of the Alliance on ways to approach and achieve the priority tasks of the agenda of the NATO summit in Vilnius on July 11-12.
President Iohannis will discuss with the leaders present at the meeting the main topics of the summit agenda, with an emphasis on the need to achieve concrete progress in the full implementation of the decisions of the NATO summit in Madrid in 2022 and the adoption of new measures, as well as on the support provided to Ukraine, accordingly, the prospects for accelerating the process its accession to the North Atlantic Alliance.
“The President of Romania will emphasize the importance of the further adaptation of the Alliance in accordance with the provisions of the Strategic Concept of the Alliance adopted in Madrid, the continuation of the measures already implemented as a result of the decisions taken at the Madrid Summit and the further processes initiated at the level of the political and military structures of the Allies during this year, especially with the aim of consolidating advanced defense on the eastern flank. In addition, President Klaus Iohannis will emphasize the relevance of the new commitment of the Allies regarding the allocation of the national budget for defense. This year, Romania is already moving to allocating 2.5% of GDP for these purposes,” adds the quoted source.
As reported in the Presidential Administration, special attention will be paid to the permanent commitment of the Alliance to Ukraine, both from the point of view of practical support for strengthening the defense capability and its stability, as well as strengthening the fundamental components of Ukraine-NATO political relations.
Iohannis will also emphasize the need for clear decisions at the summit regarding concrete progress of Ukraine on the way to joining NATO, including in accordance with the Joint Declaration signed on June 1 with President Volodymyr Zelenskyi on the country’s Euro-Atlantic integration. on the sidelines of the summit of the European political community from Moldova.
He will also emphasize the relevance of the development of allies’ assistance to strengthen the defense capability and stability of the Republic of Moldova. (Agerpress)
