Police in South Korea have requested an arrest warrant for a woman who killed her children when they were just one day old.

The woman had a hallucinatory explanation for the murders: she faced financial difficulties to care for her other three children, aged 12, 10 and 8.

The first alleged victim was her fourth child, born at the hospital in November 2018. Police say the woman strangled the baby girl the day after she was born and put the body in the freezer of her home. She is accused of doing the same to her fifth child, a boy born in November 2019.

Her husband said the woman told him the two children had been aborted, so she was unaware of the alleged crimes, police said.

The case came to light in May when the government’s Audit and Inspection Commission found that the babies’ births were not officially registered, even though there were records that they were born in a hospital.

The council then notified Suwon City Hall in Gyeonggi-do, South Korea’s most populous province, to demand a police investigation after the mother refused a home examination.

On June 21, law enforcement officers searched the woman’s home, during which she confessed to the crime. (photo source Dreamstime)
