In the absence of highly effective military equipment, Russian troops began to use old tanks that should be in a museum as kamikaze drones: they planted explosives in the combat vehicle and directed it by radio to Ukrainian positions.

Images of 70-year-old T-54s or T-55s loaded with explosives and equipped with simple radios have appeared on social media to be sent to the front in a desperate attempt by Moscow’s troops to attack Ukrainian positions, Forbes notes.

The shelling from the home-made device allegedly took place near Maryinka, Donetsk region, but the ancient car did not go far: it hit a mine after crawling 100 meters, then was hit by an anti-tank missile of Ukrainian troops.

The Ukrainian counteroffensive began on June 4, when several Ukrainian brigades advanced in several directions in the Zaporizhia and Donetsk regions, as well as in the direction of Bakhmut.

Russian improvisations at the front

Russia’s defense industry can’t keep up, and Moscow’s forces are forced to rely on aging tanks and combat vehicles and increasingly bizarre modifications of existing vehicles, including a wheeled armored personnel carrier armed with missiles borrowed from a helicopter.

Having completed modern tanks, the Russians began to bring to the front, including tanks of the late 1950s.

The T-54 and T-55 tanks are real death traps for their crews, with thin armor, rudimentary optics and minimal stabilization of the 100 mm guns.

The Russians know that the guns of these tanks do not have a large enough angle to fire a projectile more than 16 km, and the optical system does not allow you to see the target at a long distance.
