Three suspects, aged between 14 and 20, have been detained on suspicion of planning an attack on an LGBTQ+ rights parade in Vienna that drew about 300,000 people, officials said.

The three suspects – Austrian citizens with Bosnian and Chechen roots – are supporters of the Islamic State, Hajjawi-Pirchner said.

“Thanks to a successful and also timely intervention, we managed to neutralize the moment of danger for the Vienna Pride and ensure the safety of all participants,” said Omar Hajjawi-Pirchner, the head of Austria’s domestic intelligence.

He did not provide details of what may have prompted the attack, but said items banned under Austrian weapons law were seized during searches of the suspects’ homes.

The Vienna police and the Austrian State Security Service were involved in the operation.
