North Korea has convened a key party meeting with leader Kim Jong Un to determine its diplomatic and defense strategy “to address the changing international situation,” state news agency KCNA said on Saturday, according to Reuters.
An extended plenary meeting of the Central Committee of the Workers’ Party of Korea began on Friday and is also set to review the country’s economic projects for the first half of this year, KCNA reported, without providing further details.
The meeting will probably last several days.
North Korea fired two short-range missiles off its east coast on Thursday, less than an hour after Pyongyang warned of an “imminent” response to military exercises held earlier in the day by the South Korean and US militaries.
North Korea says the drills have led to an escalation of military tensions.
Last month, Pyongyang unsuccessfully attempted to launch a reconnaissance satellite, its first such attempt since 2016.
