Russia’s foreign ministry said on Thursday it had summoned a Canadian diplomat to Moscow to protest the seizure of Antonov’s plane in Toronto, and warned that Russian-Canadian relations were “about to be severed,” Reuters reported.

On Saturday, Canada ordered the seizure of a Russian-registered Antonov-124 cargo plane at Toronto airport, the first seizure of such assets aimed at pressuring Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine.

According to a foreign ministry statement, Russia told Brian Ebel, deputy head of the Canadian embassy in Moscow, that it considered the hijacking of the plane a “cynical theft”.

“Canada’s Russophobic policy will have the most serious consequences for Russian-Canadian relations, which are on the verge of rupture due to the Trudeau administration,” the Russian ministry said in a statement.

Canada’s Department of Foreign Affairs did not immediately respond.

Canada announced the seizure of the plane while Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was in Kyiv, where he announced new $500 million in military aid to Ukraine.

NATO member Canada, which has one of the largest Ukrainian diasporas in the world, is one of Ukraine’s most vocal supporters and has imposed sanctions on hundreds of Russian officials and companies, as well as wide-ranging trade bans.
