Donald Trump faces an uphill task defending himself against allegations that he illegally kept top secret documents when he leaves the White House in 2021, according to legal experts who said neither the law nor the facts appear to be on his side. , reports Reuters.

The former US president, who is running again in the 2024 presidential race, faces 37 charges, including violating the Espionage Act, conspiracy to obstruct justice and perjury.

National security experts were surprised by the breadth of evidence in the indictment, which includes documents, photographs, text messages, audio recordings and witness statements. They said they were strong arguments in favor of prosecutors’ allegations that Trump illegally obtained the documents and then tried to cover them up.

The 49-page indictment accuses Trump of illegally keeping files detailing U.S. nuclear programs, potential vulnerabilities of the U.S. and its allies, and U.S. plans for retaliatory military strikes.
