Donald Trump endangered the “national security” of the United States by, among other things, keeping US nuclear secrets after he left the White House, according to a historic indictment released on Friday and cited by AFP.
The billionaire Republican, who is running for a second term in 2024, faces 37 charges, including “unlawful withholding of national security information” and “obstruction of justice,” according to the lawsuit.
He is also accused of perjury and conspiring with his personal assistant, Walt Nauta, who is also being prosecuted, to withhold documents requested by the federal police, the FBI.
Donald Trump announced Thursday that federal prosecutors had charged him with tampering with the White House archives, a first for a former president, and that he had been subpoenaed to appear in court in Miami on Tuesday.
“I am innocent,” he declared, presenting himself as the victim of a conspiracy orchestrated by his Democratic opponents.
The nature of the proceedings was described by his lawyer, but the court files remained sealed and the Ministry of Justice kept absolutely silent.
Democratic President Joe Biden, who is also running for re-election in 2024, was careful on Friday to make sure he did not engage with Attorney General Merrick Garland on the highly sensitive issue.
“I didn’t talk to him at all and I won’t. And I have no comments on this matter,” he replied to the journalist.
