A 63-year-old woman from Romania died on Wednesday on the Halkidiki peninsula in Greece, a very popular holiday destination, the Greek press reported. Her death highlighted shortcomings in medical care, as an ambulance was able to arrive to give her first aid only 75 minutes later, Kosmodromio reported.
A tourist from Romania had just arrived with a group that was on a cruise in Halkidiki and became ill in a tavern in the Ouranoupoli area.
Shortly after they disembarked at the port of Ouranoupoli, the woman became ill while in a tavern with the group and an ambulance was called to provide first aid.
The Greek press reports that there is a problem in the health care system, and there are only five health centers on the entire Halkidiki peninsula, and the distances between them are very long.
In the case of the tourist from Romania, although the ambulance left immediately after the call, help arrived too late, only an hour and 15 minutes later.
The woman’s heart stopped, and doctors pronounced her dead, despite resuscitation measures with the help of a defibrillator that was in the tavern, as well as rescuers who arrived at the scene, notes ThessToday.gr.
After this tragic event, the president of the ambulance workers of Central Macedonia, Prodromos Develoglu, stressed that there is an urgent need to redeploy ambulances and rescuers to the region, News Break reports.
He added that Halkidiki has a special road network with narrow roads and many turns, with ups and downs in the mountainous terrain.
Also on the Greek peninsula this week, a 63-year-old woman and a 19-year-old woman and her unborn child died after ambulances arrived too late in two cases, the Greek press also reported.
The Greek peninsula of Halkidiki is one of the favorite places for Romanians who want to spend their holidays on the shores of the Aegean Sea.
