Labor Minister Marius Budai says that when he worked in the social welfare service, he had a “much lower salary” than teachers. This is how he answered the question whether the teachers told him how they live on their salary.

“You know very well that I myself was and am an employee and worked and was a social worker with much lower salaries. I know these realities, I don’t need someone to tell me,” Budai said when asked by a journalist whether teachers told him how they live with the salaries they have – for example, with 2,400 lei or 3,500 lei.

He made these statements on Wednesday after a meeting with the teachers of “ILCaragiale” College in Bucharest.

Marius Budai has been a deputy since 2016. Prior to that time, he held various directorships at Botoshani County Retirement Home, Botosani Child Protection Authority and Botosani Social Services Agency. In parallel, he also worked at various enterprises. He was also Chief of Staff/Parliamentary Counsel from 2004-2006.

According to the property declaration for 2016, in the previous financial year, when he was a senior adviser of the Botosani County Retirement House, Marius Budei had an annual income of more than 55,000 lei, which translates to a monthly income of 4,600 lei. The oldest declaration of Marius Budey’s property is dated May 2009, for 2008, when he was the coordinating director at the Botosani District Social Payments Agency. For this position, he collected more than 14,300 lei annually, which means a monthly income of almost 1,200 lei. Adjusted for inflation, this would now mean more than 2,200 lei.
