Two more votes left Council of the University of Athens to complete the chronicle of the predicted fruitless process of choosing a chancellor. Yesterday, the first ballot officially confirmed that the two candidates –Nikos Tomaidis And Gerasimos SiassosThey are immobile in their positions. This excludes the possibility of finding a compromise solution in the person of another member of the Council.
In particular, in accordance with Law 4957/2022, the Council of each HEI, consisting of eleven members, consists of six members of the university, who elect five members who are not members of the university. Only one of the six can be the rector, and it is obvious that if the candidate gains a majority of the six (i.e. the academic or business world, artists, etc.) and at the end be elected rector by at least six votes.
Six members of the university have already been elected to the EKPA Council, and Mr. Tomaidis and Mr. Siassos are at the center of the discussion, as it is they who have declared that they will compete for the post of rector in the elections that take place when the Council consists of 11 people, that is, when six EKPA professors elect five.
However, among four other internal members of the Council, Mr. Tomaidis and Mr. Siassos were reported to have received two votes each. Of course, a member is said to be relatively out of touch with the camp to which he is “assigned.” Well, we can say that the ratio is 3-2-1 with the advantage of the Tomaydis team.
None of the 31 candidates for external members of the Council was elected.
Third scenario
The first vote for external members took place yesterday – 31 nominations were submitted – no one was elected, but the votes received by each candidate from external members were not made public. The law provides for three votes before the process is declared fruitless. The second vote will take place today, and the third tomorrow. If there is no surprise at all – which is not foreseen according to “K” information – new elections will be announced. Finally, at the beginning there was also a third scenario, that is, to choose someone other than Tomaidis – Siasos. It is quite possible that he is the one who seems to have free relations with the two “camps”. Information from reports “K” that the university in question would only accept if Siassos-Thomaides also agreed.
Based on the law, within an exceptional seven-day period from the date of termination of the procedure, the rector of the university is obliged to re-announce the positions of internal and external members of the Council for the same period.
