Three Israeli soldiers and a member of the Egyptian security forces were killed Saturday morning after a shootout on the border, an incident on which Egypt and Israel have different versions, AFP and EFE agencies reported, citing Agerpres.

According to the Egyptian army, “a member of the Egyptian security forces in pursuit of drug traffickers crossed the checkpoint, a firefight with Israeli security forces began, resulting in three deaths on the Israeli side and a member of the Egyptian security forces.”

But the Israeli military has a different version of what happened, saying it was an Egyptian agent who opened fire on Israeli soldiers at a military post on the border, first killing two Israeli soldiers, and a few hours later there was another shootout between the “attacker” and by the Israeli troops who were looking for him.

“The aggressor is an Egyptian policeman. The investigation is being conducted in full cooperation with the Egyptian military,” an Israeli military spokesman said.

The border between Egypt and Israel is mostly peaceful, but drug traffickers often try to cross the separation fence, and there are occasional shootouts between traffickers and Israeli soldiers.

The Egyptian army regularly attacks drug traffickers and jihadist groups in the desert of the northern Sinai Peninsula, often leading to cross-border firefights.
