Indonesia’s defense minister on Saturday offered a peace plan for the war in Ukraine, calling for a demilitarized zone and a UN referendum on what he called disputed territories.
Prabowo Subianto called on defense and military officials from around the world gathered at the Shangri-La Dialogue Defense Summit in Singapore to issue a statement calling for an end to hostilities.
He proposed a multi-pronged plan, including a ceasefire “on the current positions of both sides in the conflict” and the creation of a demilitarized zone by withdrawing 15 kilometers from each side’s front line.
The demilitarized zone should be under the supervision and monitoring of United Nations peacekeeping forces, he said, adding that a UN referendum should be held “to objectively determine the wishes of the majority of the residents of the various disputed areas.”
“I propose that the Shangri-La dialogue find a way… of a voluntary declaration to call on both Ukraine and Russia to immediately start peace talks,” Prabowo said.
Indonesia’s offer came after President Joko Widodo’s visit to Moscow and Kyiv, where he offered to mediate between their leaders and resume peace talks. At that time, he was the head of the G20 group of major economies.
It will be recalled that the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky proposed a 10-point peace plan, which requires Russia to withdraw all its troops from Ukraine. His chief diplomatic adviser Ihor Zhovkva stated that Ukraine is not interested in a ceasefire that would consolidate Russia’s territorial advantages.
